believe it or not...

I'm kinda in the same place. There are a lot of watches i like, but nothing is screaming out at me at the moment! I've temporarily diverted my attention elsewhere. Besides, the next one for me is a major milestone, so it'll need to be something extra special...

What next?!

 By: AndrewD : December 5th, 2011-13:29
As a collector, watch aficionado, or whatever we want to call ourselves, I feel like I should have a clear goal for the next watch. But I don’t. And it’s been a year. And it is not helped by watch friends who inquisitively ask: “what’s next?” There are wa...

You have . . .

 By: Dr No : December 5th, 2011-14:09
. . . reached "middle age" . . .

How would you define that, Art?

 By: AndrewD : December 6th, 2011-01:08
There is certainly a component of reflection and enjoyment of goals reached and pleasures shared. But life goes on. Andrew

Life does go on, and . . .

 By: Dr No : December 6th, 2011-11:05
. . . that's the essential point, Andrew. We have increasingly less (how's that for an oxymoron!) time the older we get. We always knew that materialism was fleeting, but it takes the achievement of middle age to appreciate it. I believe you've reached th...

Yikes Art!

 By: sidneyc : December 6th, 2011-12:37
I like your definition but that means I've prematurely reached "middle age" before hitting 40!? Worried.

"Middle age" in this context . . .

 By: Dr No : December 6th, 2011-13:02
. . . isn't chronological, Sidney - it's an allegory. Nicolas is over 40, but his horological appetite suggests he's eternally youthful!

Phew!

 By: sidneyc : December 6th, 2011-17:49
Thanks for clarifying, Art! I was beginning to count my white hairs! Nico is the Count, no wonder he's eternally youthful! It would take many years of experience to find that fountain of youth! In any case, Andrew's in a very nice place to be! It would be...

Insightful and pithy as usual. Thanks Art. [nt]

Time perception ...

 By: AndrewD : December 6th, 2011-13:39
And the perception of time passing speeds up as we get older. Remember those childhood summers that seemed to be endless? No more, unfortunately. This is because much of what we do has become repetitive and our brains compress this, filling in the gaps wi...

Meaningful is definitely the way to go for ME Art

 By: ArthurSG : December 6th, 2011-18:36
And goes back to the generic quality vs quantity discusson in many ways but I am firmly in the camp of the former. It then begs to define what meaniningful is and this I believe is purely a personal matter and there is no one standard which was agian allu...

I remember the hororgasmic state you were in...

 By: Hororgasm : December 5th, 2011-14:31
Whilst it is impossible to be perpetually in a hororgasmic state, just be on guard against sliding into horofatigue state.....it's a cold dark place(ask Arthur!!) Best, Horo

LOL... The 3rd seems to MIA recently

 By: ArthurSG : December 7th, 2011-16:39
And I do need to replace that pink shirt...

I wouldn't worry about it..

 By: fernando : December 5th, 2011-16:08
too much Andrew, it'll come. Not having a clear goal is the best state to be in IMO as whatever arrives next will be a whopping surprize! I also believe the watch seeks you out and you'll know it when you see it. I may not be a good example to follow as I...

Congratulations Andrew!!

 By: sidneyc : December 5th, 2011-16:14
You've managed to achieve what many of us here have failed miserably!!! I'm getting close to there!!! Just after a Kari, dear Lord, pwetty please!!

my itch has been scratched - for now! [nt]

It will come....

 By: KIH : December 5th, 2011-20:29

OK Andrew, before i diagnose, can you tell me your age..haha.. just kidding..

 By: KC74 : December 6th, 2011-22:28
Looking through your nice collection, you have the following: Breguet - La Tradition, very nice, dressy, elegant, looks complicated, gold, sometimes element of gold brings good fortune to some. FPJ - What not to love, another, independent, well crafted, I...

That's a very astute diagnosis ...

 By: AndrewD : December 6th, 2011-22:39
In fact ALS is at the top of my list. I had a little setback in the last month when I finally got to see the old and new 1815 Chrono's side by side and changed my preference - that's a topic for a future post. I should also mention that I don't warm to th...

Too much to list...

There are various degrees of desire ...

 By: AndrewD : December 6th, 2011-13:52
There are certainly watches that have caught my eye and I would love to own. But here I am talking about watches that consume you, are never far from your thoughts and stay with you for months or years until you can reach them. Those watches come along ra...

Indeed, I only want watches that haunt me...

 By: patrick_y : December 6th, 2011-19:41
I do indeed have quite a list of watches that consume and haunt me. Some old, some new. Most of which are classically elegant. The vast majority of these haunting timepieces come from Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Lange. They haunt me to such exten...

SIHH 2012

 By: edwardwchang : December 6th, 2011-05:00
SIHH 2012 starts Jan 16! I'm looking more forward to SIHH than christmas.

Good question ...

 By: nilomis : December 6th, 2011-08:26
I'm limiting very much my "next" by following some simple rules, every time I'm looking a watch: 1) I go to wear this watch? If yes, how many times/month? 2) This watch will carry future maintenance problems, lack of parts etc.? 3) Again, I go to wear thi...

 By: AndrewD : December 6th, 2011-14:32

Definitely a nice thing Andrew!

 By: sidneyc : December 6th, 2011-17:55
No damages are done! As I think this should be temporary - but not sure for how long. It's a nice feeling to have, when you actually own the piece that you lust after the most, and you are enjoying it so much in your own hands, or on your own wrist, that ...

Some people are punished by reaching their highest aims?

 By: anaesdoc : December 7th, 2011-07:53
Well, Andrew, I think you ask a deep question here. If we reach our ultimate goals, a feeling of emptyness may arise afterwards. Aren´t the treasure hunters in history haunted whether they chased the ancient Pharao´s tombs or the "Holy Grail" an...

Misread the post totally. You are indeed very fortunate to be in the situation
