A tongue in cheek post...

Allow me to apologise before hand but I really need to get this rant off my chest.
==================
Controversial content ahead. You have been warned!

So I visited the above site. My brain is bedazzled by the copious amounts of mambo jumbo on that site.
Use of a techno catch phrase: Check! Smartphone, as oppose to dumbphone or more controversially R*****Phone (if you have seen the movie Tropic Thunder you'll know what I mean).
Use of words to express coming togetherness: Check! Hybrid and fusion. Frankly, I prefer "coming togetherness" because it creates a unique amalgam of crossbred ideas and mixed metaphors. I should copyright that ASAP.
Use of sentences that really don't make any sense: Check! The first luxury smart phone with watch DNA. Whoa! Slow down a minute buddy. Are you saying this sucker is organic?
Use of .com era bleeding edge phrases to describe leading edge: Check! My all time favourite .com phrase is back with a vengeance. "Best of breed" - a cross breeding exercise that is about as exciting as witnessing a great dame trying to mount a chihuahua.
But to be honest, I am very excited that they finally stuck a mechnical watch winder into a mobile phone. I think that is real innovation. And the days of digital clocks on mobile phones are numbered. Can't wait for the LG version, which will contain a Chinese Valjoux knock-off.

Novelty rumour: UN hybrid cell phone
By: Marcus Hanke : March 6th, 2009-00:56
Well, in fact it is more than just a rumour: At the Basel show, Ulysse Nardin will present an exclusive business cell phone. The innovation lies in the energy supply system, which, to a part, should be left to a conventional winding rotor, known from self...

the second picture LVT? With the attention to details & finishing that UN is famous, their phone would put Phone manufacturers to shame i believe. Can't wait to see what the front looks like.
Me too,

Blackberry, Treo, Iphone, blah blah blah. I dislike talking on the phone, I do it at the office when necessary. I don't use a phone to go online. It is not my appointment book. I can calculate a tip at a restaurant without it. It is convenient for my fami...
I wonder if the power source is derived entirely from the winding rotor?
By: Z3 : March 6th, 2009-22:51
If that's the case, and the "power reserve" is reasonably long (say 5 days standby or 20 hour talk time, etc...) then it is very cool! After all, we do move our cellphones quite a lot, as they get bounced around in our pocket, bags, etc... Instead of just...

Hi Jon, It's a trick to get a winding rotor to sufficiently power a Seiko Kinetic even, and the power consumption of a quartz wristwatch is miniscule compared to that of a cell phone, especially a "smart" one. Less movement plus much larger power requirem...
Hi John, I understand your point...
By: Z3 : March 8th, 2009-15:08
Let's hope that UN has some new technology up its sleeves. Otherwise the rotor will just serve as the energy source of a conventional mechanical watch display embedded in a conventional Lithium-ion battery-operated cellphone... Hardly an exciting product ...
Well, the watch-thing has been done already ....
By: Marcus Hanke : March 10th, 2009-04:38
... as you can see in one of the posts above, and could not be called "hybrid", which is how UN calls its new phone. Therefore I personally assume something like a Citizen- or Seiko-style rotor, charging a capacitor, which then feeds either the main or so...
Actually.....

.....to power this phone you'll have to bounce up and down constantly, Tigger like (that's where the "best in breed" bit comes from Gaz). Or possibly wave your hand around a lot. Maybe that's where the bluetooth earpiece comes into play. They are talking ...

has anyone else noticed that the rotor is straight off an ETA 2892-A2???
rather unusual

Putting out such bad quality pictures is a strange choice from un. There seems to be 4 designs!!!

critical cause by the difference of views
By: LVT : March 10th, 2009-08:59
There will be more criticism in websites of mobile phone , in the view of them advance and value of mobile is in-side technology , they care to the pragmatical value , same as quazt watch is better than mechanical watch in term of show a time .
the article that i read this week gives the impression
By: G99 : March 10th, 2009-10:28
that the watch is purely powered by the kinetic movement of the rotor which allegedly works the same as a seiko kinetic or Omegamatic. i cant see its possible personally and a total waste of money. Graham
